How to split an Excel workbook by worksheet

  1. Select an .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm or .xlsb workbook.
  2. Review the worksheet list detected in the file.
  3. Select Download all sheets to start separate XLSX downloads, or use an individual worksheet button.
  4. Keep the original workbook if you need workbook-level features later.

When splitting Excel sheets is useful

Workbooks often grow into collections of monthly reports, department tabs, customer lists or regional worksheets. Splitting those tabs into separate files can make it easier to share only the relevant worksheet, archive individual tables or hand data to another workflow without copying and pasting into new workbooks manually.

One worksheet per output workbook

Each generated XLSX file contains one worksheet. The output filename combines the source workbook name with the worksheet name so several split files are easier to identify after download.

About formulas, formatting and advanced Excel features

Spreadsheet formats can contain workbook-level relationships that extend beyond a single worksheet. Common cell values, formulas and basic worksheet content are handled by the browser spreadsheet library, but macros, cross-sheet dependencies, external links, charts and other advanced features may not survive a split exactly as they appeared in the original workbook.

Private browser-based Excel splitting

The selected workbook is processed locally in the browser session instead of being sent to a Utilumi file-processing server. For regulated, confidential or mission-critical information, always follow your organization's approved security, retention and document-handling policies.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Excel workbook uploaded to a server?

No. The workbook is read and split inside your browser. Utilumi does not need to upload the selected file to a processing server for this tool.

What does Split Excel by Sheet create?

Each worksheet is saved as its own XLSX workbook. The output filename includes the original workbook name and the worksheet name.

Can I download only one worksheet?

Yes. After the workbook is loaded, each worksheet has its own Download XLSX button. You can also start downloads for every worksheet at once.

Will every Excel feature be preserved?

The tool is designed for worksheet-level data and common spreadsheet content. Advanced workbook-level features such as macros, external links, named ranges, VBA projects, charts or relationships between sheets may not be preserved in a one-sheet output workbook. Keep the original file as your source copy.
