EXCEL TOOL

Compare Excel Files

Compare two Excel worksheets cell by cell, find changed or missing values, and download a difference report without sending your workbooks to a file-processing server.

✓ Private by design · files stay in your browser

FILE A

Choose first Excel fileXLSX, XLS, XLSM or XLSB

FILE B

Choose second Excel fileXLSX, XLS, XLSM or XLSB

This tool compares cell values and formulas, not visual formatting, charts, comments, macros or workbook metadata.

How to compare two Excel files

  1. Select the first Excel workbook as File A.
  2. Select the second workbook as File B.
  3. Choose the worksheet to compare from each file.
  4. Select Compare worksheets to scan populated cell positions.
  5. Review the differences on screen or download the complete CSV difference report.

What counts as a difference?

Utilumi checks the same cell address in both selected worksheets. A difference is reported when a value or formula changes, when a populated cell exists only in file A, or when it exists only in file B. Matching populated cells are counted in the summary but are not added to the difference report.

Useful for revised reports and handoff files

Cell-by-cell comparison can help when two versions of a report look similar but you need to identify where numbers, labels or formulas changed. It can also be useful before sending a revised workbook, checking a received update or reviewing a duplicated worksheet after manual edits.

What this tool does not compare

The comparison is intentionally focused on worksheet data. It does not attempt to compare colors, fonts, borders, conditional formatting, charts, comments, VBA macros, named ranges or workbook metadata. Formulas are compared as formulas, so two cells with the same displayed result can still be reported as different when their formulas differ.

Private browser-based comparison

The selected workbooks stay in the browser session while the comparison runs. For confidential, regulated or mission-critical information, always follow your organization's approved security, retention and document-handling requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Are my Excel files uploaded to a server?

No. The selected workbooks are read and compared inside your browser. Utilumi does not need to upload them to a file-processing server for this tool.

What does the Excel comparison check?

The tool compares populated cell positions in the two selected worksheets. It detects changed values or formulas, cells that only exist in file A, and cells that only exist in file B.

Does it compare formatting, charts or macros?

No. This comparison focuses on cell values and formulas. Visual formatting, comments, charts, macros, workbook metadata and other workbook-level features are outside the comparison.

Can I compare different worksheet names?

Yes. After each workbook is loaded, choose any worksheet from file A and any worksheet from file B before starting the comparison.

Can I download the differences?

Yes. When differences are found, you can download a UTF-8 CSV report containing the cell address, difference type and values from both files.
